| Are Southern Africa’s borders effective enough? Are they ready for 2010? And are they controlled? |
(2007-03-26) The protection of borders in Southern Africa and beyond is now, more than ever, of paramount importance. As South Africa and its neighbouring countries prepare to safeguard their tourists and citizens ahead of the 2010 World Cup, cross-border crime, human trafficking and illegal smuggling of goods remains at an all-time high. Fraud and corruption at the border posts and in Government Departments fuels this problem. Added to this, increased trade and tourism between African countries necessitates improved border infrastructure, bigger investments in identification and tracking technology and a heightened focus on border security and control.
The question lies, what is being done to increase stability and security at these Borders? Research conducted by IQPC indicates that there is a desperate need for collaboration amongst stakeholders and the building of partnerships between organisations involved in border security, infrastructure and management is critical.
