| International Animal Week |
(2006-09-28) 04 October is the start of International Animal Week and the SPCA movement in South Africa will be drawing attention to the fact in as many ways as it can. The week (ending on 10 October) includes St Francis of Assisi Day, the patron saint of animals.
The change in name from the previous National Animal Week is to emphasise that the SPCA movement is consistent with animal welfare organisations throughout the world and joins them in celebrating the wonderful world of animals around us.
Many people believe that the SPCA is an organisation for pets. Not so – and International Animal Week emphasises this. Especially in South Africa, we are blessed with such an abundance of animal life that people come from all over the world to experience and appreciate it. We have magnificent wildlife, havens for marine creatures including whales plus the most amazing butterflies and bird life. Add to that the domestic and companion animals with whom we share our lives and the real value of the animal world around and is truly appreciated.
International Animal Week is about celebrating. SPCAs throughout South Africa have events planned and would be delighted for all support. Outreach projects will also take place, reaching out to impoverished communities and giving assistance with their animals – including so-called “farm” or working animals. Healthy animals mean healthy people.
Please check www.nspca.co.za for details of all the SPCAs in South Africa. The SPCA in YOUR area can tell you what is happening in YOUR area so why not give them a ring? It is a week of fun, enjoyment, appreciation of animals and the SPCA would like as many of you as possible to join in.
